ENFPS’s Xmas Social Event was held on Thursday 8 December in Coastline Community Church, Pittenweem.
The evening started with Professor Anthony Lodge giving us an enlightening and entertaining presentation on the results of his research from original sources into the history of Pittenweem’s saltpan industry which predated those at St Monans by some 250 years.
Prof Lodge drew on charters conserved in the Pittenweem Cartulary (now kept in St Andrews University Library) which record land transactions in the 1530s to 9 wealthy individuals, licensing them to set up saltpans and extract coal in what eventually became Pittenweem’s Salt-toun; by 1540, a 9-pan complex was up and running. The full Saltpans article is included in the 2022 ENFPS Annual Report. (add link)
Thereafter members and guests enjoyed mulled wine, mince pies and other festive nibbles.
